ENSURING THAT THE MANGROVES AND WETLANDS ON THE CREEK SIDE OF PALM BEACH ROAD ARE PROTECTED
NMEPS members have had regular and intense interaction with appropriate Government authorities to prevent debri dumping, construction of illegal structures and reclamation of water bodies which are habitat of birds. The people contacted were MD CIDCO, NMMC Commissioner, Police Commissioner, Chief Conservator of Forests ( Mangrove Cell) and their staff. We are pleased to report that with their active participation, NMEPS has achieved the following results this FY so far:
2.1 – Prevention of further debri dumping and Removal of over 150 truck load of earlier dumped debris on mangroves and wetland areas which are the habitats of birds including migratory birds like flamingos.
2.2 – Erection of barriers by CIDCO to prevent trucks to go on to mangroves to dump debris especially in the night.
2.3 – Demolition unauthorized structures in CRZ areas on the creek side of Palm Beach Road and prevent illegal land reclamation. It is important to protect mangroves/ wetlands on the coastline of Navi Mumbai to minimise the effect of Global Warming.
2.4 – The Police Commissioner has introduced regular police patrols to prevent debri dumping, illegal reclamation of water bodies, construction of unauthorised structures and preserving the mangroves/ Wetlands, important habitats of birds including migratory flamingos.
